The joyous anticipation of a first child is abruptly shattered when newlyweds Shlomo and Chana learn that their unborn baby may suffer from a rare genetic condition.

So begins their journey into a world of medical intricacies filled with difficult choices and agonizing decisions.

They reach out, drawing support from their Rav, their parents, and each other.

A newly discovered family diary offers surprising support, too.

One of Chana's ancestors was among the first Jewish immigrants to New Amsterdam in 1654. As she and Shlomo work together to type up the handwritten diary, they are drawninto the valiant struggles of these early pioneers from Recife, Brazil, who survived the Inquisition, pirates, poverty, and anti-Semitism to put down roots in a new land of freedom.

The project comes first as a welcome relief to the tension of their own situation and then as inspiration, showing eternal Jewish courage when faced with adversity.

Another winning read by Chaya Spiegel, author of Search for the Lost Children.

Adult reading.

I started this book one night, planning on reading the first chapter or two before going to sleep. Mistake. I went to bed at about 3 AM that night. Riveting and thought-provoking, the storyline kept me turning page after page until the very end. "For My Child" is well-written and an absolute must-read.

A beautiful memoir of a newlywed couple's harrowing experience intertwined with the story of a fledgling Jewish community in the 1600s. The tension and emotion of the story is gripping. What really shines is the steadfast faith of the characters in both plots as they encounter so many obstacles beyond their control. Insightful and poignant, this book is a winner!

A well told bifurcated memoir of émigrés seeking religious freedom in the 1600's, juxtaposed with a modern day narrative chronicling a newly-wed couple's anguishing ordeal when they learn that their fetus has a fatal genetic abnormality.
Aside from the beautiful lucidity in which the author tells her tale, one cannot but be struck by the amazing way in which this young couple's faith, Torah values, mutual love, respect and devotion help direct the course of their actions. While so much is beyond their control, one can see the foundation upon which they stand, has all the lasting characteristics that are the true foundation of a Bayit Ne'eman b'Yisroel.
